Psychology Major Requirements

The Psychology major is just part of what you'll need to graduate from UIUC. General Education courses and electives (courses you take for fun, to develop a skill, or for requisite pre-professional courses) will make up your entire UIUC academic experience.

In order to graduate with a Psychology major, 32 hours* of Psychology coursework (coursework with "PSYC" rubric) is required.

*New freshmen matriculating (beginning) Fall 2012 will be required to complete a minimum 33 hours of Psychology coursework.

I) Introductory Psychology (complete one)

PSYC 100 - Intro to Psych

(Offered Fall and Spring)

PSYC 103 - Intro Experimental Psych

(Offered occasionally)

PSYC 105 - Psych Introduction

(Offered occasionally - for Access & Achievement Students only)

II) Statistics (complete one)

PSYC 235 - Intro to Statistics

PSYC 301 - Psychological Statistics

(Recommended or students planning to pursue Ph.D. work in Psychology)

OR Equivalent Statistics Courses *– STAT 100; ECON 202; EPSY 280; SOC 280


*These statistics courses will fulfill the statistics requirement but the hours will not count toward the 32 PSYC hours.  Statistics courses not listed above will be reviewed for equivalency status.

VI) Advanced Hours (complete at least 12 hours - includes research Methods

Complete at least 12 hours of 300- or 400-level Psychology courses. All research methods/lab courses listed above will count toward this requirement. Consult the Course Catalog to view possible advanced courses.

VII) Supporting CoursE work

Nearly 1/3 of your LAS degree will consist of electives. How will you use those hours? That's what supporting course work is - 12 hours of work outside psychology that will complement the core program. The coursework will need to be approved through consultation with a Psychology advisor but you will the one to decide what your supporting course work will be.
